 I got some stack traces, and reported this bug to GTK here
 http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=566101  since the stacks I
 grabbed were in there, however I'm told that since pidgin can still
 create, destroy, and update the titles of, new windows, and also reconnect
 to servers, join chatrooms, and log chats, the calls to GTK must be
 returning, so if that's true then GTK is either just taking too long or
 pidgin is calling it too much.  This is still happening in 2.5.3.
