 Showing idle time is very useful. The accuracy is not critical but absence
 of this information is not good. I think it's perfectly OK to display a
 timer from the time someone says "I am now idle", regardless of how long
 he was idle before his machine declared him idle. It is how long I
 observed you to be in idle state. If additional information is available,
 great, otherwise, you are idle for at least this amount of time because I
 witnessed it.

 How about this:

 If the protocol supports idle time, display it.

 If the protocol does not support idle time, show the best guess, but in
 addition, display a + after the timer, or italicize the count, implying a
 fuzzy computation.

 This works even if contact is already idle when you log in. What you see
 is how long you've observed him to be idle. Perhaps the tooltip can add
 some clarification, like "Idle: 29+ minutes (was idle when logged in)"
