 Pidgin is now used by a huge number of people, who have varying needs.
 Just about every IM I have ever used allows flexible, on the fly sorting
 of contact lists.

  1. '''Sort alphabetically'''
     a. Entire contact list (no Groups displayed)
     b. Within each group (Groups displayed)

  2. '''Sort by IM service''' (this is often CRITICAL - think corporate
 Jabber!)
     a. Per IM service, entire contact list (no groups displayed)
     b. Per IM service, within each group (groups displayed)

  3. '''Sort by online state''' (online first, offline following)
     a. With one-key show/dont_show offline contacts

 (Item 3 is probably more of a modifier to existing sorts)

 To make this useful, one would ideally need a '''single keystroke''' (say
 ''Ctrl-S'') that toggles through all the views in a cyclical manner, with
 the last/first option being the manual state that the user had arranged
 things in earlier.

 I know that this sounds like a lot of work, and even with my limited
 developer knowledge, I know it is. But I hope that someone '''looking for
 a FOSS project to work on''' sees this and takes it up as a challenge to
 implement.

 This could probably be refined a lot more with some discussion (assuming
 it doesn't get closed with WONTFIX immediately :)
