 You forgot to add your sarcasm tags.

 No it doesn't work.  Here is why, if you would have read the actual
 message.  The only "Sound Events" you can choose are:
 Buddy login in
 Buddy logs out
 Message received
 Message received begins conversation
 Message sent
 Person enters chat
 Person leaves chat
 Someone says your name in chat

 What I'm asking for is
 Message received and window doesn't have focus


 The problem is that if the window doesn't have focus because you are
 working on something else and you have a dual screen, therefore pidgin
 isn't behind the window that has focus, you probably won't notice pidgin
 brought to the top.  The reason, it may already be on top on the other
 screen, therefore it doesn't move or flash or anything.

 Checking the sound event "message received" gets real annoying at work and
 people are around you and your computer is making lots of pinging sounds.
