 It sounds like AIM must be sending us something other than a space (it
 appears to be a
 [http://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/char/007f/index.htm Unicode
 Delete character]).  Either that, or we're somehow parsing it wrong.  I
 can't imagine that this would be a platform-specific thing.
