Comment:

 I managed to trace the bug down to a specific checkbox option in Vern.
 The problem only appear if you enable the "Set Desktop" or "Set Color"
 option. This option make the desktop background change to your custom
 bitmat or custom color when switching around your virtual desktops.

 Exactly why this feature misbehaves in Pidgin/GTK I have no idea.
