 Steps to reproduce:

 1) In the preferences window, set "Hide new IM conversations" to Always.
 2) Have a buddy with whom you have no conversation open send you a custom
 emoticon (tested with an MSN buddy).

 Result: the conversation window pops-up, despite the setting set in step
 1.
