 I'm not sure that we want the normalize function to be responsible for
 this. Making the normalize function non-blocking would involve changing
 all sorts of things to be non-blocking. Is it possible to take the call
 for a new IM conversation for user 6221 and open one for user "tom" by any
 chance?
