 This keeps happening to me only on my home PC (not work).  It's happened
 no matter if I have focus on the Chat window.  My Home PC uses
 AIM/MSN/GChat(XMPP)/ICQ and I have the problem.  My work PC only uses
 XMPP(jabber) and I haven't run into the issue yet.

 Both are WinXP SP2 with Pidgin 2.3.1.
