 This really isn't something that pidgin has any control of - all pidgin
 does is ask Windows to open the URL with whatever it uses to handle http
 requests (Which should be almost identical to putting a URL in
 Start->Run).  I have no idea how the other clients you've mentioned pass
 stuff to the browser, so I can't guess why that would work when this
 doesn't.

 I've seen cases where this was failing when Firefox was open, when it was
 closed, the first click (or when triggered from Start->Run) would work.

 Have you removed IE completely? ([http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308089])

 Try setting IE as the default browser and then setting firefox back.
