 It would still be preferable for pidgin to:

 1) State the restrictions it checked the file against, and which it failed
 2) Then offer the user the *choice* to convert the image, and have that
 actually work.

 I just spent 15 minutes resizing my .JPG to a .PNG (as on checking the
 source I finally found that for Jabber only PNG is allowed, minimum 32x32,
 max 96x96, and must be at most 8191 bytes).  If the dialogue had stated
 "For this protocol images should be between 32x32 and 96x96 pixels and no
 more than 8191 bytes, in one of the following formats: png" I'd not have
 wasted anywhere near as much time.

 Auto-conversion that does actually work would be a bonus.
