 OK, I got it to compile without warnings and still work as before. It
 needed explicit casts and sorting out some const modifiers, and a few
 other changes.

 I'm going to test this a bit, see if I can reproduce a crash (and fix it?)
 then post the patch here.

 About handwritten messages not respecting new-conversation-hiding
 settings: that's true for all custom emoticons. I'll open a new ticket for
 that issue.
