 I set it to E:\Documents\Pidgin (C:\ and \ make no difference).
 Just for the sake of it I also reinstalled Pidgin with the environment
 variable existing before the new installation.

 Here's part of what I get for pidgin -d:

 prefs: Reading C:\Users\Admin\AppData\Roaming\.purple\prefs.xml
 prefs: Finished reading C:\Users\Admin\AppData\Roaming\.purple\prefs.xml

 I haven't looked at the source code but are you sure Pidgin even reads
 this variable?
