 > Can you attach gdb to pidgin and see what pidgin believes it is doing
when it is spinning in this situation (or use other methods to determine
what exactly pidgin thinks it is doing)? pidgin should be waiting until
the automatic reconnect period has passed and should then be attempting to
 reconnect automatically.

 hi,
not sure what I was looking for, a tried to attach when situation occured:

 ....
 Reading symbols from /usr/lib/gconv/UTF-16.so...done.
 Loaded symbols for /usr/lib/gconv/UTF-16.so
 0xb77abf80 in g_thread_self () from /usr/lib/libglib-2.0.so.0
 (gdb) continue
 Continuing.

 then I pressed ctrl-c
 Program received signal SIGINT, Interrupt.
[Switching to Thread 0xb71f0720 (LWP 3691)]
 0xb69927e0 in ?? () from /usr/lib/libssl3.so.1d
 (gdb) continue
 Continuing.

 Is this enough for you?

btw: I found out that pidgin finally reconnects, after a minute or more.
 (whole time cpu at 100%)
