 I have a dual boot machine (Windows/Linux(Ubuntu)) and I use the same
 pidgin configuration under both operating systems. On Windows XP, SOCKS5
 seems to be buggy, because during the handshaking procedure I get the
 following error message (translated from german language): "Can't
 establish connection to server. Received invalid data during connection to
 server."
 I'm using plugins for Yahoo IM and ICQ and both plugins show the same
 behavior.
 Under Linux it works fine. And under Windows it works also fine with
 SOCKS4.
