 Assuming plugins write data to our files through our API we really should
 be ensuring that it is valid before writing it out. If it isn't valid we
 should either scream loudly and/or convert it and then write it. As to
 reading corrupted files written in any other way, I'm not sure there is
 anything we should reasonably be doing (we shouldn't be deleting or losing
 the files though, we should be backing them up and starting anew).
