Comment:

 Getting a backtrace when you break into the spinning pidgin might provide
 a little more information than just the current information it prints out,
 just run 'bt' at the gdb prompt before telling it to continue running
 pidgin.

 I'm hoping that there might be something useful there or at least that
 someone with more concrete suggestions will show up. =)
