 Oops,

 i removed the package 'pidgin' that came with ubuntu as i compiled it from
 source, but 'libpurple' still remained...
 Hmm, strange. I'm sure as Pidgin was Gaim, uninstalling 'gaim' removed all
 packages.

 Now I've removed the package 'libpurple' uninstalled pidgin via 'make
 uninstall' and recompiled it and now it works fine.
