 I think I see the issue you're talking about here. Actually if I leave
 guifications, I can make it work too. It just breaks on "on unread
 message". As long as pidgin is started with the setting set to "always"
 then it works. If the setting is changed, the update stops working. If it
 gets put back to always, the update works after pidgin is restarted.
