#6283: No sound with gstreamer

I'm sure that I'm just being stupid, but... I've searched through the old
gstreamer bugs and none of them have helped me.

I can't get any sound out of pidgin-2.4.3 with gstreamer. Using the
"Command" pref with any of esdplay, aplay, or play works just fine...
setting the pref to Automatic, ESD, or ALSA fails. The debug window
doesn't give any errors about being unable to set audiosink, so clearly
it's able to set the audiosink... but there's no sound.

I compiled gstreamer-0.10.20 from source, along with all of its plugins
(base, good, bad, ugly). All of them are installed in a non-standard
location ($HOME/Packages/<pkgname>) using the standard --prefix flag to
./configure (and then installed the usual way, with 'make' and 'make
 install').

I compiled pidgin-2.4.3 from source the same way, and again installed in a
non-standard location via the same method. I got no errors during
compilation or installation. Pidgin runs just fine and can play sounds
with the Command="[esd|a]play %s" setting... it's just the Gstreamer
settings (Automatic, ESD, ALSA) that fail, and with no error messages.

My GST_PLUGIN_PATH points to all of the gst plugins, and gst-inspect finds
all of the plugins just fine (and sets the gstreamer-0.10 registry up
 without problems).

Since all of the installations seemed to work fine, what's failing here?

 I'm on CentOS 4 (Linux 2.6.9-42.0.10.EL #1), running Gnome 2.8.0, Pidgin
2.4.3, GStreamer 0.10.20 (with all associated plugins). It may be worth
noting that gstreamer-0.8 is installed in /usr/bin as part of CentOS 4,
and gstreamer-properties apparently modifies only the gstreamer-0.8
registry (and is therefore dependent on gst-inspect-i386-0.8) and NOT the
gstreamer-0.10 registry. I'm not sure how to change that or whether it's
 even the problem, though.

Assistance would be great. Obviously, I can just run Pidgin with the
Command="[esd|a]play %s" settings and presumably all would be well... but
I'd like to get it running with gstreamer.

Let me know if you need any diagnostic output - I'd be happy to provide
 it.

 Thanks. =)
