 Interesting.  Maybe the autostarting is related then.  I note that if I
 start all the apps slowly, with a couple of seconds between, nothing goes
 wrong.  If I click them in a quick row, either Pidgin or XChat will end up
 with large icon - doesn't seem to affect any other apps but that may just
 be coincidence.
