 Unfortunately I could not work out the time to work with my system
 administrator in order to find out why pidgin and spark didn't work well
 together.  After a few weeks my google connection started breaking down
 intermittently too.  After a few more days ALL my connections, AIM, yahoo,
 MSN, mySpace, icq, etc began failing intermittently.

 I updated to 2.4.3 (not explicitly supported on ubuntu, but I did get it
 to work, and the problem persisted.

 I switched to Kopete and have had a stable connection for over a week now.
 Once my schedule frees up at work, I'll come back and start debugging
 pidgin once again.  Until then, please close out this ticket.

 I do want to thank deryni for trying to help me out!
