Comment:

 When I run other programs from the drive, I have no problem shutting down
 the drive. If I plug in the drive, start only Pidgin, then exit Pidgin,
 then try to remove the drive, I get the 'cannot be stopped".

 Some more information .. this happens at work (I haven't tried it at
 home), where I am running XP professional and on the network here. I do
 not have administrative rights to my machine.
