 Found a fix that worked on my machine.
 1. Uninstall Pidgin and delete all Pidgin directories
 2. Uninstall GTK+ and its associated directories
 3. Remove the C:/Documents and Settings/%user%/Application data/.purple
 directory.
 4. Reboot
 5. Reinstalled Pidgin 2.4.3 with GTK+

 After that it worked fine for me. Hope the info helps. Not sure what the
 bug is, but that got it working on my box.
