 I'm having a similar problem. When I'm only connected to AIM and I change
 my away message using the quick away message, the away message updates.
 When I'm connected to both AIM and GChat, it does not change on either AIM
 or GChat, though the quick away message box at the bottom shows my new
 away message. If I restart pidgin at this point, it reverts to the
 previous AIM away message. If I am only signed into GChat and I change my
 away message, the away message is changed. If at this point I reenable
 AIM, my away message on AIM is changed to the one on GChat. If I change my
 away message in pidgin while logged into both GChat and AIM, it also does
 not update on GChat.

 Using version 2.4.3 on Ubuntu, with no plugins installed.
