 I use Gnome-PPP to connect to a 3G network.
 When using this type of connection, Pidgin waits at startup forever for
 the network connection (there is a corresponding message displayed just
 behind the status).
 The only way to force a connect is to change the status using the tray
 icons context menu. So I always have to do this when I start Pidgin.

 Maye its the same problem like in Firefox, where the browser asks the
 network manager for the connection status. As I connect to the internet
 without using network manager, the application thinks that there is no
 network available and stays in offline mode.
