 I don't see how the problem could still be there...

 Regardless of whether it is using tunneling or not (i.e. it is port 80),
 when the connect doesn't happen immediately, it is calling `http_canwrite`
 when `PURPLE_INPUT_WRITE` is triggered on the socket.

 Note the the code you're referencing above have been moved to the callback
 method and is no longer called directly.
