 pidgin could indicate that the message was sent as an offline message but
 I'm not sure doing so would be as helpful as it would be annoying.

 Offline messages will be marked exactly how the protocol indicates them,
 if the protocol has an indicating marker that the message was received
 offline then pidgin could (and should) indicate this in the UI. If the
 protocol doesn't indicate that (something I consider likely) then pidgin
 can't and shouldn't. XMPP for example indicates offline messages by the
 inclusion of a delayed timestamp (which pidgin displays in a, by default,
 different timestamp format).
