 This looks like it's server related, although it couldn't hurt for pidgin
 to strip invalid unicode it doesn't need.

 I'm not seeing any server side errors other than the disconnect, but I'm
 also not running in full debug mode. We're using two implementations of
 ejabberd which deryni originally setup. ;) The ejabberd 1.0.0 service is
 the one kicking you out upon sending a bad unicode character. The ejabberd
 1.1.4 is not. Looks like the newer version might handle this better.
