 The Windows version (at least) of Pidgin ignores typed Unicode characters.
 for example, if someone asks how the weather is, and I tell them that it's
 87° and humid today, the Alt-0176 to create the "degrees" symbol is
 ignored.  I can paste it in from another application, but that is kind of
 awkward.
