Comment:

 The only way to disable the ping stuff is to hack the source and
 recompile, and I don't know if there is a fix for openfire as I'm not even
 sure what the problem is exactly. All I know is that in this case (and in
 a small handful of other cases) !Openfire seems to be dropping stanzas (or
 at least the response stanzas) on the floor as opposed to responding or
 delivering them. Which has the annoying side-effect, in this case, of
 convincing pidgin that the server isn't there anymore and so it
 disconnects. See this

 post has gotten no responses.
