 I'm again experiencing this issue in 2.4.2 but somehow different. After
 you set your status to Away for a long time or after setting Away for
 several times (not sure) then going back to Online, buddies over Windows
 Live Messenger's end see you as "Idle" and "Away" over Pidgin user's. To
 retrieve your online status again, Disabling/Enabling MSN account won't
 help, as well as going from Offline to Online and from Invisible to Online
 statuses won't help. You should terminate your Pidgin client completely
 then reopen it, the status would go back online.
