#6056: ALT+XXXX entry of non-ascii characters not working in GTK+/Pidgin

Regarding GTK+'s non-ascii key entry vs Windows non-ascii key entry:

The ctrl+alt+shift+u method is by no means a usable workaround for the
many people who know all the ALT+XXXX key combinations they use by memory.
It's a big usability limitation for users with US keyboards who
communicate in languages other than English. It is irrelevant whether
that problem was caused by the GTK+ toolkit or some other issue, it's
still an issue that Windows users will have with Pidgin, and that needs to
be addressed for Pidgin to be successful on the Windows platform. I
wouldn't pretend to be the one to know the best way to fix this... An
update to Pidgin that takes care of the broken support for this on GTK+,
passing the issue upstream in the hopes of an updated GTK+, maybe
something else entirely. I do know that is is a problem, and is something
 that needs to be fixed.
