 You said that they see little squares and that all broken characters look
 the same.
 I suppose that this is not an encoding problem. I suppose that your carons
 are sent correctly but the receiving client can't display them because
 they are missing in the font that is being used.

 If this is true, your carons should reappear when your friend sends the
 broken characters back to you.
