 I guess I don't see anything here that indicates we're doing anything
 wrong - am I missing something?

 If we can't write the whole encoded message, we append it to the "to be
 written" buffer and move on.

 When you say "this message does not reach server", do you mean you've
 watched the network packets somehow?  Since the code for this is
 practically identical to the standard code, I suspect that it is actually
 being sent to the server.
