 I had a similar problem ages ago on an older version. Try adding your
 gmail to check if it is protocol specific or not. Is this on Windows?

 Also how are you changing your away message, by choosing a saved one or by
 using the quick away message? (my only did not work when i tried to create
 an away message the quick way.
