 Yes, I'm sure. I installed Pidgin 2.4.2 and nothing else.
 Usually, !^ doesn't get displayed until you enter a 2nd character which
 then gets modified by the !^. So to get !^ I have to type [!^][space] and
 it doesn't get displayed until the 2nd key is pressed. Typing [!^][a]
 results in â, etc. !^ does not modify a 2nd character if the following
 character can't be combined with !^. So typing [!^][-] results in "!^-"
 being displayed after the 2nd key press and likewise [!^][!^] results in
 "!^!^" being displayed after the 2nd key press.
 This is not the case in Pidgin, however, where [!^][!^] is evaluated to
 "!^" (i.e. it behaves like [!^][space]) and also gets displayed after the
 2nd key press.
