Comment:

 Can you attach gdb to pidgin and see what pidgin believes it is doing when
 it is spinning in this situation (or use other methods to determine what
 exactly pidgin thinks it is doing)? pidgin should be waiting until the
 automatic reconnect period has passed and should then be attempting to
 reconnect automatically.
