 I have the same issue as well. Pidgin 2.4.0 for Windows, GTK+ Runtime
 1.12.8 rev a, and MS-Windows theme.

 When I first hit backspace, the text input area shrinks, and it reexpands
 when I either type another character or have deleted all the letters in
 the input area.
