Comment:

 Tested and confirmed:

 1) Pidgin 2.2.0 - 2.3.1 did not have this problem.

 2) xmpp.fqdn value was not set in our Openfire installation. Setting it to
 the FQDN of our server rectified the issue and Pidgin 2.4.0 clients can
 make SSL connections witout any problems.
