 I had this problem with Ubuntu 7.10 and Pidgin 2.2.1.

 I noticed that the sound method was set to "ESD" in the sound tab in the
 Preferences. I had disabled  ESD, so I switched the sound method to "ALSA"
 and the problem went away.
