 clicking on the message area puts the cursor there, so you have no clue
 the input focus is actually in the input area.

 The focus doesn't go to the input area until you start typing, so you can
 still do stuff like mousing around, copying and pasting in the message
 area, but once you start typing a message, it does to the input area.
