 I am using windows but I can try the same in Ubuntu if it helps..

 Client in QIP is set to "QIP 2005 (UTF8)" by default. With this default
 setting no text can be read when sent to Pidgin 2.4.0, only an error!
 I've tried many different codepage settings combinations in both QIP and
 Pidgin but it did not help (UTF-8 too).
 The Client ID in QIP has to be changed to "QIP 2005" and then I can read
 regular text sent to Pidgin. But for the central european characters I did
 not find any fix.

 So actually these are 2 problems. One new and very bad in 2.4.0 and one
 old problem with CE chars.
