jason0x21: Yes, it proved to be impossible to get both manual sizing and
automatic resizing to work at the same time. We are trying to figure out
 if
there is a way for the current mechanism to be usable by everyone, because
that would be a *better* answer than simply adding a preference.

You don't need a reason beyond that to want it, you do need a reason
 beyond it
to convince us that adding the preference is the only solution. Which is
exactly why I keep asking for reasons. I'm more than happy to give in to
 them
when they are given and reasonable.

If harse messages were limited to the beginning rush this would be a
significantly more palatable discussion, but calling us and our questions
 rude
 isn't exactly not harsh.

swbrown: Both of those are also solved by my suggestion, so thank you.

tkl: If you are actively typing in the conversation window enough that you
 are
typing more than two lines are you not going to notice new messages
 anyway?
What about the movement from the typing causes you such problems in that
 case?
When you aren't in the window there is no jumping other than remote typing
 and
new messages, so I fail to see what your point here is.

Tenchan: Under what circumstances do you find yourself resizing the input
area? Are there no guidelines for this which could be handled
 automatically?
What if we let you specify a default size in percent of the window height?

I haven't read the entire thread but in what I have read I didn't see
 anything
condescending, so I apologize for wherever you did see it but suggest that
 perhaps you are misreading things.

kepplah: The question is whether anyone actually needs manual resizing or
whether auto sizing (with some modification, like what I suggested before)
 can
be made to work for everyone. A solution which is a modification of the
current behaviour is significantly simpler for everyone than is adding an
option back, especially if we can reasonably avoid doing so.
