Comment (by deryni):

swbrown: My solution 'eliminates' re-layouts in that it allows people to
set the size to the maximum size they normally use and then never hit the
resize limit again. The difference is that instead of creating scrollbars
if they do hit it it does the much more friendly thing of expanding
temporarily to allow them to see that little bit extra for a minute. Do
you think that is a bad thing?

Not requiring people to resize the input area when they type a slightly
longer message than normal is a good thing, not requiring people to resize
the input area in that case is also a good thing, not requiring people to
keep a large input area to avoid the need to scroll or resize is a good
thing. The question here isn't about feeling restricted it is about
letting people get an input area that just works for them and doesn't need
them to resize or scroll constantly. (Which to jump back a second my
solution allows for significantly more people than the current solution
and is why I suggested it and am planning on implementing it.)

I see no benefits to going back to manual resize only that my suggested
solution doesn't have other than for the people that resize simply because
they can. Do you? Can you elaborate on them?
