 I wholeheartedly agree. I've had to stop notifying people that I'm talking
 to them just to avoid the "left conversation" message.

 For a new (or less savy) user, the implication of the "left conversation"
 message is that the conversation is over. They will liken it to a phone
 being hung-up at the end off a call. They may not realise that this
 message is simply an indication that the window has been closed at the
 other end.

 The "left conversation" message, IMHO, is flawed for two reasons:

 1) The user who closes the window may not be expecting the conversation to
 end - it is quite an assumption on pigin's part to automatically inform
 the other party that the user does!

 2) It is completely unclear that this behaviour is going to occur or can
 be disabled. The "Notify buddies that you are typing to them" option makes
 no reference to it.

 My suggestion would also be to split the option in to two.
