 Just do Buddies | New IM ... and start an IM with some random user
 (yourself, a random string, a friend, it doesn't matter).  No need to load
 the channel list.  (Note that you could also join a random channel from
 Buddies | New Chat ..., but that is much heavier weight -- starting a new
 IM doesn't require any network traffic, etc.)
