 Aha!

 I'm using the "German (Switzerland)" keyboard layout, and to type them, I
 have to hit Caps-Lock and then ü ö ä, because shift-ö ä ü produces é à and
 è :)

 Also, I'm on Vista, not XP.

 Don't know about GTK+ input method... I just used the win32 installer. How
 can I check this?
