Comment (by Tafkadasom2k5):

Are there any new informations about this?

Yesterday I fell into that trap. A good friend of mine wanted to have ICQ,
too. So, after getting her a number with the ICQ-website, I installed
pidgin. She added some people, and 3 days after that, I visited her and
 was very upset:

Pidgin seems to create a group called "general". So I renamed her
"general" list to "allgemein" (thats "general" in german) and pidgin asked
my, if it should put all contacts from general to the list "allgemein". I
 clicked on "yes" of course.

After that, every person on the list "general" had to autorize her again.
I think it's still the same bug, but it doesn't delete the buddys in this
case- it just wants to add them again.
