 Implementing subgroups on protocols that don't support it just asks for
 problems when users go back to the official clients (and/or only takes
 effect locally which is useless for people who use more than one computer
 regularly). The XMPP spec for subgroups is an ugly hack that embeds
 semantic data into what is otherwise an opaque string (as far as the
 client is concerned) and I very much do not like it. A clean specification
 for it in XMPP is possible (albeit more complicated) but even assuming
 that were to exist pidgin would have a hard time implementing it because
 other protocols really just don't support it at all.
